Invited by a team of master glass blowers, Annemiek has traveled to the island of Murano, the birthplace of Venetian glass blowing art. In this inspiring environment, Annemiek executed her designs in collaboration with a team of the best glass blowers on the island.
What makes the Murano glass blowers so special?
Since the thirteenth century, these glass blowers have mastered most sophisticated techniques, such as manufacturing crystal glass, enameled glass, glass with gold colored strings (aventurine), multi-colored glass (millefiori) and milk glass (lattimo). They were the first glass blowers in Europe able to make a mirror.
How is glass blown?
The main ingredients of glass are sand, soda and limestone. These and other raw materials are mixed and melted in furnaces. The glass blower uses an iron blowpipe. This blowpipe is put into the molten glass in the furnace, so the glass will stick to the pipe. Then the glass will be blown, rolled, shaped etcetera. Time after time, the glass has to be put into the furnace to stay mutable. Finally, the glass is put into a cooling furnace, to cool down slowly.
