The jury has unanimously awarded first prize to entry number 7352.7352
The jury believes that this window will be a highly interesting and fascinating contemporary addition to the Nieuwe Kerk. The window clearly reflects the artist’s unique vision, which will sustain the solitary position of the window. The question has been posed as to whether sufficient justice has been done to the legacy text. The window requires some explanation, but the underlying message is apparent from the artist’s clear presentation.
The interplay of lines and use of colour in the design are striking, although it is only after closer examination that one can clearly see what is depicted. The design itself, a hybrid with a strong use of colour, possibly through the use of fusing, and the dynamic interplay of lines, partly the lead lines themselves and partly the painting, result in this unique window and allow it to speak. The security expressed in the encircling hands, the interplay of lines ascending to heaven and the emotion of this moment in the Biblical story led the jury’s unanimous decision: a window that is in keeping with the tradition of stained glass and will remain interesting for years to come thanks to the use of all technical resources.
